Welcome!

Hey guys!
The blog is finally up (thanks a lot to Kyle since I had no idea how to set it up) so we now have a place to keep our chatter going. So let's get this discussion started. How was everyone's first week(s)?

  2. Hi everyone! I haven't done a comp yet...kinda worried but I keep telling work I want to do more stuff and they won't let me. How many comps does everyone else have?

  3. Hey everyone,

Luckily we don't need our 1st 5 comps until July 1 according to Jaime's email yesterday. I haven't not done any yet. I have been floating between sim and treatment.

Ridges is very busy treating about 40 - 45 patients each day plus the sim patients. We have 1 simulation machine similar to what we had at Argosy, then we take them to Radiology for the CT and 1 Varian machine for treatment. 3 therapists with one on sim and 2 on treatment, so it is nonstop all day.

Everyone at Ridges is very helpful. What had everyone else been doing?

  4. Hey all,
Karen, your schedule sounds crazy! Right now the machine I'm on has about 26 patients a day, but we have some interesting set ups (prone breasts) which take a little longer to set up. I have done my four nursing comps already and I'm going to attempt my tangent breast set up this week. I'll let you guys know how I do!

  5. Hi everyone!

There are 2 Varian machines, a tomo, a CT simulator and a regular sim machine at Salem Hospital. There are also 14 therapists. We are currently treating 25 patients on both Varian machines. Tomo has a slightly different schedule.

I don't have any comps done yet. I just learned how to "drive" the Varian this week. I am also going to start my nursing rotation on Friday but I'm going to either do a half day or a full day of nursing. I'm not going to do it consecutively for 40 hours.

If you can believe it, it has only rained once in Salem since I arrived! Fall will be a different story.

  8. Things move pretty quickly around here...sometimes too quickly for me to grasp. The therapists are very experienced and it is just day to day for them, but they have all been open to explaining things.

Some things are so different from lab while others are exactly the same. So I am trying to not ask too many questions and just observe....so hard not to "know" or see what they see. Feel a little overwhelmed at times, but do feel a little relief for not having to complete 5 comps until July 1.

  9. PS My nephew, Nick was just diagnosed with Hodgkins. So if you are interested in following his story and maybe help you get an understanding from the patient and family side as he goes through his treatments, he does have a caring bridge site.

  11. hi all,
its john, maybe should have just had my user name as john.
Karen sorry to hear about your nephew, hope all works out the best for him and your family.

well phoenix is awesome always staying busy inside and and out of clinic. We are seeing about 55 patients a day and adding more each and every day. they threw me in about the second day doing about everything. IGRT and IMRT are amazing to work with. Still learning my way around the computer system and charts.

Everyone at the clinic works really well together, its been the best work environment I've ever been apart of. The physician treats everyone (patients and staff) as though they were family, he even bought lunch for everyone the entire week last week. I feel lucky to be at this clinic, everyone's always open to teaching me and helping me get the best out of the experience.

hope everyone else is having a good experience

  12. Hey John,

I figured it was you or Dana.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying AZ!

I like my clinic as well. All the therapists are good mentors. They are used to having students there and are very helpful.

  13. Hey, John

How many machines and therapists does your clinic have?

At Ridges we do about 60% breast/chest walls, 15% Prostate - IMRT, 25% is a mix of things like H&N, bones mets, Hodgkins, sarcoma, etc.

We have 1 Dr., 1 nurse, 1 dosimetrist, 1 physicist, 1 receptionist, and 3 therapists (2 of which are pregnant due in June and August). People dynamics are very interesting.

Thanks for the kind words about my nephew....he is a strong positive young man with great support.

  14. Karen, so sorry to hear about your nephew. Keep us updated on how he's doing. What is your clinic doing when they lose the two therapists when they go into labor?

Nancy, I'm glad that it's only rained on you once so far.. I have been rained on much more than that.

John, your clinic sounds really nice and very busy! What time do you have to be there in the morning?

Dana, How is Marshfield? Do you have a busy clinic as well?
